Santosh Gangwar(born 1 November 1948) is a former minister of state in Government of India and a leader of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He had been the Member of Parliament from the city of Bareilly for 20 years(1989–2009). He was also the chief whip of the party in 14th Lok Sabha. He faced defeat in the 15th Lok Sabha Elections, 2009 by a very narrow margin.

Shri Gangwar is associated with social work and active politics for over three decades.

Career

He had been a former minister of state in Government of India, holding the portfolio of Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas with additional charge of Parliament Affairs in 13th Lok Sabha. Prior to this, Shri Gangwar was Minister of State of Science & Technology with additional charge of Parliamentary Affairs from Oct. 1999 to Nov. 1999. Shri Gangwar was elected for the first time to the 9th Lok Sabha in 1989 from Bareilly Parliamentary Constituency and since then he has continuously represented this constituency as a BJP Member of Parliament for six successive terms till 2009.

Shri Gangwar was jailed during the Emergency for guiding a people's movement against the tyrannical and oppressive administration of the then Government. Shri Gangwar has served as a Member of the U.P. State BJP working Committee. He also held the position of General Secretary of the Uttar Pradesh BJP Unit in 1996. Currently, as National Secretary, BJP, he is focussed on improving BJP's vote share in UP which use to be a very strong hold BJP.

Early life

Shri Santosh Gangwar was born on 1st Nov. 1948 in the village of Teolia of the district of Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh and had his early education in Bareilly and higher education from University of Agra and Rohailkhand. Shri Gangwar dedicated himself to the selfless service of public and the nation from an early age. Shri Gangwar has achieved a special place in the heart of common man through his honesty, sincerity and committed efforts towards resolving their problems.

Bareilly - his constituency

Bareilly, his constituency, has been a stronghold of the Bharatiya Janata Party, a right winged Hindu Nationalist Party, with both the Member of parliament(M.P.) and Member of Legislative Assembly (M.L.A.) coming from the Bharatiya Janata Party. Bareilly has also seen as a strong emergence of Hindu nationalism movement during the last two decades accompanied by the growth of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal in the region.

Bareilly, always has been a battle ground for the INC and the saffron parties with regional parties like Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party having low presence. Since 1989, Shri Santosh Gangwar has been the M.P. of Bareilly. He won consecutive elections in 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004.

Other Developmental Works

In addition to various developmental works undertaken, Shri Gangwar was also instrumental in establishing the Urban Co-operative Bank Ltd. in Bareilly (smt sobhagya gangwar, Manish Agarwal Dr. Pramod Saxena, Paramjeet Singh Oberai, Munnidevi Gangwar, Sheela Arya as its Directors) and is holding the responsibility of its Chairmanship from its inception in 1996-97.

Under his commitment towards overall development of villages, he has initiated a project in Bareilly on Integrated Rural Development through Co-operative Movement using Animal Husbandry Technologies.
